Week #5
Eliyahu is an eight-year-old boy who is an English Language Learner. His reading and writing skills are extremely weak because English is not his first level. I selected a short story on his grade level to test his reading skills. The writing piece was way above his level. It was a frustrating story for him, he made multiple mistakes while reading. His main weakness is letter recognition, he confuses many letters that look similar. Additionally, the sight words are one big mush in his head and he cannot remember how to read each one. He tries to read by memory but ends up mixing words up. He does not meet the grade 3 ELA standards; CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.L.3.4-Determine or clarify the meaning of unknown and multiple-meaning word and phrases based on grade 3 reading and content, choosing flexibly from a range of strategies. He is not able to decipher the meaning of the texts on grade 3 level. My next step would be to test him with grade 2 reading material. If he is successful with that level, then I will continue teaching him on second grade level. Additionally, I will continue to look out for the specific areas that he is stumbling with when reading. The main thing that must be improved is his letter recognition. His word blending skills are pretty good. After we practice more with the letters his reading will improve immensely.
